Hiking & Outdoor Adventures

From Gentle Walks to the High Sangres

Westcliffe sits beside one of Colorado's most dramatic mountain ranges. The Rainbow Trail stretches more than 100 miles along the eastern side of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, through forests and mountain meadows, and our guests can reach it on foot right from the neighborhood.

  • Rainbow Trail for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking
  • Music Pass Trailhead into the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness
  • Alpine lakes and 14,000-foot peaks for experienced hikers
  • Lake DeWeese for fishing and mountain views just outside town

Weather changes quickly at elevation. Start longer hikes early and bring water and layers.

Restaurants & Dining

Small-Town Charm, Unexpected Style

Westcliffe may be a small mountain town, but its dining scene has plenty of personality, from wood-fired meals and locally roasted coffee to craft cocktails and a tiki lounge you will not believe is in Colorado.

  • The Constellation for dinner and craft cocktails in a 1920s-inspired lounge
  • Hidden Peak Tiki Lounge for island-style plates and creative tiki drinks
  • Bootleggers Bistro, known for its Friday evening prime rib
  • Chappy's Woodfired Grill, a longtime Main Street favorite
  • Peregrine Coffee Roasters and the shared bakery at 411 Main Street for mornings
  • Westcliffe Farmers Market, typically Friday mornings in summer, with local produce, food, crafts and music

Stargazing & Dark Skies

Some of the Darkest Skies in Colorado

In 2015, Westcliffe and Silver Cliff became Colorado's first International Dark Sky Community, and at just under 8,000 feet they are among the highest in the world. On a clear night the Milky Way stretches from the Sangres to the Wet Mountains.

Scenic Drives & Attractions

Where the Drive Is the Destination

Some of the region's best scenery lies along the Frontier Pathways Scenic and Historic Byway, which connects mountain valleys and forests and pairs beautifully with a day of exploring.

  • Bishop Castle, a stone-and-iron castle built largely by one man, about an hour away
  • Lake Isabel for fishing, paddling and hiking along the byway
  • Main Street galleries like Greenleaf and 3rd Street Gallery, with the First Saturday Art Walk June through October and Fall Gallery Fest in early October
  • Railroad and mining history at the historic depot and Silver Cliff Museum
  • Jones Theater for live performances throughout the year

Horseback Riding & Guest Ranches

Saddle Up in Ranch Country

Ranching has shaped the Wet Mountain Valley for generations, and there is no better way to see it than from the saddle: open meadows, aspen groves and the Sangre de Cristos rising above you.

  • Music Meadows Ranch, a guest ranch near Westcliffe with horseback riding; contact the ranch to arrange a ride
  • Georgia Ranch for guided trail rides
  • Bear Basin Ranch for outfitting and backcountry trips
  • Rainbow Trail, open to horseback riders and reachable from our neighborhood

Summer rides book up quickly, so reserve ahead.
